CAPER 2009 BOOTH REPORT

GAME: the bake sale

Caper Chair notes: I called Panera (Junction location and University location) and Einsteins in early February and asked them "if we could have the leftovers on Friday night, March 6, for our school event." I then arranged for volunteers to go to each location, pick up the goods, and take them home to wrap individually in plastic. We got a variety of loaves, bagels, sweets, etc. Since we had an abundance of bagels, we offered a bagel to those setting up on Friday night. We also gave a bagel with cream cheese to each of the high school volunteers who came on Saturday, at the end of his shift. We had a few big tubs of cream cheese, sitting in a big pan of ice, available for folks to take.

In keeping with the theme, Mary chose the book "Harold and the Purple Crayon" and had cute drawings and quotes (about Harold's picnic...all pies) on display! Very cute!

Rules of the game, how many tickets it costs: tickets or cash were accepted. Big loaves from Panera were $4, small loaves were $2.50, bagels were 0.50 or 3/$1. Sweets were sold at full (various) price for the entire day and continued to sell until gone. A little after 2:00, bagels were sold at a dozen for $2!

Supplies used (are any stored that are re-used? Any special gear or prizes needed? How many tables/ chairs?): Donations from Panera, Einstein Bagels and Victor Mondry were awesome additions! Thank you! Thank you! to those who arranged that. I brought in a love seat, comfortable chair and table which were placed in the "garden club nook" and were in use virtually all day.

Decorations used: Other than furniture above, only paper.

Involvement of teacher and students in planning booth: None

Scheduling/staffing (how many per shift are needed? Other details?): My husband and I staffed it. Although there’s always business it’s kind of mellow too. This was also possible for us because our kids are older and go around on their own.


Suggestions for next year, or helpful tips and pointers: -- Next time I’d try to round up more help with set up. Having the baked goods individually wrapped was time consuming but made for much easier sales.
