We have a lot of huge books made of paper mache for the decor in the entrance. I rolled newspaper to get the cover to stand out, then covered the book in colored paper (held on with paste.) The whole experience felt more like wall-papering than paper mache. I used a 2" brush to paint on paste quickly... learned that trick from a kindergarten teacher!
To make the art for the mural, I photocopied photos from the books onto a transparency, then used the overhead projector to make them large enough to trace. I accidentally got a few black permanent-ink marks on my basement wall! Oops!
